What is a Trigger?
A "trigger" is an action or occurrence that causes a person with misophonia to feel annoyance or rage and typically create a "fight or flight" response. Not all triggers affect all misophonia sufferers, and even the triggers that do affect people with the condition, they do so in varying degrees, many times due to the frequency, intensity, or duration of the triggers. The below links list some of the triggers that affect people with misophonia. If you know of other triggers not shown, including smell or taste triggers, feel free to send them through the "Contact Us" link to be added to the list.
WARNING: Some people find that when they read words naming potential triggers, they become sensitive to those triggers as well. Before clicking on the below links, understand that this can happen to people who don't even have misophonia (perhaps as a sympathetic response). Stop reading the lists if you find that the words are eliciting discomfort as you read them.
If you find that some of the items do bother you, this does not necessarily mean you have misophonia; but you may want to visit a doctor with expertise about the condition to help determine if you do. (Note: The link will take you to another website not associated with SenseHaven.com.) If none of the doctors on that website are in your area, and if your personal physician isn't familiar with misophonia, you may also try a local audiologist to see if they have experience with misophonia sufferers.
